The number of senseless murders of African Americans at the hands of law enforcement is an alarming epidemic in this country. The White House has encouraged police officers to be rougher with suspects and has called the deaths of black men and women at the hands of police “a local matter.” But this isn’t a local matter; it’s a national crisis. At the same time, African and Latinx immigrants are experiencing discrimination and harsh treatment, held in substandard conditions in private detention centers and deported at higher rates and for lesser charges. This convening will enable participants to discuss concrete ways the church can combat racialized policing and immigration enforcement, and police violence, drawing upon Black, White and Blue Together, Matthew 25 and other faith-based initiatives.
